LUCY LU

Hi I'm Lucy Lu. I am two years old but look like I'm ten years old due to my horrible injuries. These injuries mean that GLWR have put me into a long term foster home with, would you believe it, three other greyhounds and even more visiting greyhounds. They tell me that they call this place “Granny’s Dog Centre”. Mind, I love them all to bits.

When I first came here all I wanted to do was sleep. Mum had to wake me to eat then I would go back to sleep. Tara, Sox and Charlie would at times come and lick me, but I just wanted to be left alone to sleep.

One day, soon after I got to my new home, I was taken to the vet – ugh, not nice! He took some x-rays, and boy, when he showed them to my new foster parents Mum had a little cry and Dad went white. What the x-rays showed was that I had a smashed paw (I told everybody when it happened how much it hurt but no one back then listened or cared) but the worst was yet to come. Wait for it.... they found I had no elbow! Due to a nasty infection in the bone, my elbow has been eaten away and boy, it hurts. It hurts when I move, when I lay down; let’s just say it hurts all the time.

The very nice vet took me under his wing and put me on some really strong antibiotics plus pain killers, which are helping me a lot. I still cry out sometimes, but now that they are helping me I have found I want to play and pounce on toys. I still feel the pain on occasions but it’s a lot better.

My favourite pastime is sitting on the window sill waiting for Mum and Dad to come home. Mind, I have put on some weight (which is good cos I was so skinny) but it doesn't help with the window sill as I keep falling off onto the settee.

Before Christmas Day my Mum had made forty-eight mince pies for the family. Charlie and Tara are both so much taller than Sox and I so when Mum went to the loo they did their thing and well, yes, we helped them eat the lot! Dad was not amused and muttered that he would have to hire a skip for all the resulting poo, but we all enjoyed ourselves.

So you see, I have a cheeky side and it’s starting to show itself.

I know I will have to have a lot of treatment for my leg and I have the love and support of my family to help me cope with it but I also know my treatment will not come cheap...

...so please, will you help me? My needs are great and Mum says I'm a lovely girl who deserves a chance at life. If you sponsor me you will get a lovely photo of me, a certificate, ready for framing, a year’s subscription to the GLWR newsletter and some extras throughout the year and it will only cost £15. Please contact them at info@glwr.org.uk

You can keep up to date with my treatment and recovery here on the GLWR website at www.glwr.org.uk and also on the GLWR forum at www.glwr.proboards.com

With love from Lucy Lu xxxx

RUDI

Rudi the lurcher was handed in to a dog's home in a terrible condition. His feet, ears and nose were a rotting mess and it was thought that the kindest thing to do would be to put this  poor soul to sleep to end his suffering.

Luckily though, his carers saw a spark of something, a will to live in this terribly neglected and suffering boy and decided to ask the vet if there was anything at all he could do. The vet could only offer a course of supplements. If they didn't start to work in four days there would be no hope for Rudi.

Well, amazingly, after a few days of TLC and supplements Rudi looked like a different dog. The dreadful state of his feet, ears and nose was improving and Rudi's cheeky, loving personality was emerging. As soon as he was well enough to leave Rudi was welcomed into the home of a GLWR fosterer who nursed him back to full health and has made him part of the family.

It turns out that Rudi has an auto immune deficiency and it was this that caused the skin condition which nearly cost him his life. He is on permanent medication but this means that apart from the occasional peeling nose he is fit and healthy and able to make many public appearances as a wonderful ambassador for GLWR.

Because Rudi has a long term medical condition he has become a GLWR sponsor dog.

If you would like to sponsor Rudi it costs only £15 a year and you will receive a lovely photo of him, a beautiful certificate, ready for framing, a year's subscription to the GLWR newsletter and some extras throughout the year.

STAR

Star

Poor little Star was taken in by GLWR after she finished her racing career with a badly broken leg.  When we took her to our own vet, it was discovered that she had three fractures to her forepaw and when her x-rays were examined, it was found that these untreated injuries were at least four months old.

Star

Star wore a cast on her leg for 6 weeks and she was a good and patient girl.  She will always walk with a limp, but she is now pain-free for the first time in many, many months.

Star is a sweet girl who did not deserve to be mistreated in this way.  She now lives happily in a foster home which she shares with another girl, a Mastiff!

Star will always need close medical supervision and will be prone to arthritis in her patched-up leg.

If you would like to sponser Star, please contact us. Sponsorship is £15 per year and you will receive a photograph of Star along with a beautiful sponsorship certificate suitable for framing.  You will also receive a year's subscription to our quarterly newsletter.  A sponsorship for Star would make the ideal birthday or Christmas present for those who just can't squeeze in another dog of their own!

BRADY (formerly Tommy)

Brady (formerly known as Tommy) came to us with a badly broken wrist which had not been treated.  He had run his hardest on the racetrack but had stumbled and broken one of his front legs.  Rather than spend the money to save Brady's leg, his trainer gave him over to rescue with GLWR.  He arrived crawling with fleas, worms and in severe pain with his poorly wrist.

Brady became the focus for GLWR's "Tommy's Appeal", which culminated with one of our team members doing a sponsered kennel lock-in to raise the money for his operation.  She spent a day locked in the kennel with Brady, while visitors arrived to donate money and meet Brady and all the other dogs.

Brady looks out from his kennel

True love was born on that day, and after Brady had recovered from his operation, he went home to live with our GLWR team member and her two other sighthounds.  Brady will always walk with a limp, and in wet weather he suffers badly with arthritis in his damaged wrist.  He does better on grass than on pavement and may well need further surgery and treatment in the future.

Despite this, he is an unbelievably happy, jolly dog and makes friends quickly wherever he goes.  He has the unnerving talent to "smile" just like a human and shows true gratitude and contentment with his new home and family.

If you would like to sponser Brady, please contact us. Sponsorship is £15 per year and you will receive a photograph of Brady along with a beautiful sponsorship certificate suitable for framing.  You will also receive a year's subscription to our quarterly newsletter.  A sponsorship for Brady would make the ideal birthday or Christmas present for those who just can't squeeze in another dog of their own!

 MORGAN

Morgan is a stunning ex-racing greyhound with a happy playful nature.  He stayed in our kennels for a long time, before finding his forever home and going on to his new start in life.  As our dogs in kennels are excercised on grass, we had no hint of his racing injury during his time with us.  It was only when he went to his new home and began to walk on pavement, that it became apparant that Morgan has a permanent limp as a result of an untreated injury from his racing days.  Morgan has been checked over by our vet and we have been advised that he will just have to live with his slight disability.  The leg may need  surgery in the future and Morgan may be prone to problems with his joints.

Morgan's new home is a now a permanent foster home.  This means that while he will live out the rest of his days with his foster family and his GLWR brother Magic, GLWR will remain responsible for his on-going medical care.

If you would like to sponser Morgan, please contact us at info@glwr.org.uk . Sponserships are £15 a year and you will recieve a beautiful sponsership certificate suitable for framing, a glossy photo of Morgan and a years subscription to our quarterly newsletter.

 ASHLEY JACK

Ashley Jack is our first sponsor dog. He is a beautiful 4 year old greyhound who has suffered damage to his right hock, the result of an old racing injury. He has received veterinary treatment for his injury and is fine at the moment, but we have been warned that he may require more extensive surgery in the future.

Jack relaxing in the house

Because of the doubts about his future fitness, GLWR has decided that Jack should not be adopted, but permanently fostered. This means that while Jack now lives permanently in a loving home with his foster family, GLWR remain responsible for his veterinary care.

Jack now lives with two other greyhounds, Frank and Lulu, and is a well-loved member of the family. He makes public appearances at some of our GLWR stalls and will be happy to greet you if you turn up to our events. Jack is very free with his kisses!

If you would like to sponser Jack, please contact us. Sponsorship is £15 per year and you will receive a photograph of Jack along with a beautiful sponsorship certificate suitable for framing.  You will also receive a year's subscription to our quarterly newsletter.  A sponsorship for Jack would make the ideal birthday or Christmas present for those who just can't squeeze in another dog of their own!
