Seren

From Seren's Mum
Two years ago my beautiful brindle girl Elise had to be put to sleep due to bone cancer. As often happens, the decision was made during the small hours and my vet came out on an emergency call that night. I was so devastated, I promised myself that I would never have another greyhound.
Wrong! A few months later, my vet phoned to say that he had a 2 year old greyhound in his surgery waiting to be euthanized. The dog was healthy, and he was not happy about killing such a lovely young dog, and did I know anyone who could have him?
At the time I was intensively caring for one of my rabbits who had jaw abscesses. I was hand syringing her 5 or 6 times a day, in between cleaning her and medicating her. (Not easy with a bunny) So, being unable to take the greyhound myself, after dozens of phone calls, Dave agreed to have him.
The vet delivered the greyhound to my house that night, the rabbit went to my mums and I stayed on the sofa with the dog to make sure he was ok. After peeing up my furniture, the greyhound settled straight away. I reluctantly drove him to meet Dave on the motorway the next day and handed him over, bawling my eyes out.
I could not get him out of my mind, and sadly little Lola passed away that week after losing her battle with the abscesses. That of course meant that I could have a greyhound again. I phoned Dave straight away and explained what had happened. I went back down to meet Dave at the kennels and brought the beautiful greyhound back with me. Dave had called him Blue, but I changed it to Seren which means Star in Welsh.

Billy

Billy has been with us now for 2 years, he moved in with us in June 2007. We've been meaning to let you all know how he's been getting on, but just haven't had the time. It took him awhile to settle down but now he's very at home. He has a very special friend that he like to chase round the garden, he is a rabbit called 'Bunny' (Who said a greyhound doesn't get on with small animals). When he's left on his own he likes having picnics out of the bin, there's lots of lovely left overs in there from lunch time sandwiches to evening meals, so when we remember we put the bin out of his reach. He's very spoilt and gets his own way and loves nothing more than cuddling with everyone on the sofa, although he does like it all to himself and tries to push everyone off. I'm sending a couple of Billy one with him with his friend 'Bunny'.

A mesage from Dolly's Mum
I feel really awful that I have not been in touch more about the gorgeous Dolly and with computer problems and a lack of camera action I have never before now sent you any photographs of our very beautiful girl enjoying her new life. It will be two years on 24.05.09 since she came to live with us and I am sure you will agree that she has taken very well to her new life. If she was not so greedy I can quite honestly say that she would be perfect in every way.

She is so good. Incredibly clean in the house. Very well behaved when taken out for a walk - unless there is food around and then obedience goes out the window. But she will walk to heel off the lead, not chase cats or anything else furry. Loves to play chase with all kinds of other dogs. One of her favourite activities is racing the trains as they go by at the local recreation ground. The train drivers have got to know her and toot as she runs alongside, or sometimes as she passes them by! She loves to play with her toys, loves the sofa and is just SO cuddly. She does not quite cuddle up to the cat but will let him walk underneath her and even on top of her if she is lying down!
Please find attached but a few photographs of our very special girl. She is certainly the best thing to have happened to us in the last two years. Even the cat quite likes her now! Rest assured she is the centre of our universe and the whole household revolves around her. Thank you so much for letting us have her.
MISSY
Hello to everyone at GLWR
We thought we would give you an update on our lovely Missy.
Missy came to us just before new year and she’s settled in really well. She was so quiet at first, and she still is very placid and laid back, but her personality has really come out. She’s a real foody and it’s impossible to prepare anything in the kitchen without her shadowing us the whole time just in case a little bit of food falls on the floor. She loves her walks and we’re very luck in that we have a flood plain in front of the house, a park to the left and acres of farm land spanning out the other side. There are always lots of dogs around and she seems to have a particular passion for spaniels… perhaps it’s the ears?

We try to take her up to the Bradenstoke Dog playground once a week so she can run off the lead. It’s wonderful to see her run and she loves it to bits. For anyone living in the Chippenham/Swindon area I’d really recommend it as it’s completely safe and fenced in.

JESSIE (formerly Jackie)
Jessie looks very anxious and stressed in her new home .... NOT!

MOLLY (formerly Spot)
Thank goodness for that black spot. If she closed her eyes she would be invisible in the snow!

BRODIE (formerly Speedy)
"Brodie came to us for the weekend at the end of September 2008 “just to give him a break from kennels”. Who were we kidding? The moment he walked through the door we knew he wouldn’t be going back to kennels (except to visit). Our lurcher Bailey has accepted Brodie as his little brother and they have great fun together.
Brodie is a fantastic mix of affection, fun, naughtiness, thievery, laziness and loyalty – a perfect greyhound really!
We quickly found items disappearing, ranging from gloves, mugs, slippers and tea towels to a tub of curry powder (don’t ask) and the entire kitchen bin. We didn’t have very far to look ... only as far as Brodie’s bed. His thieving became less frequent as he settled in and now he prefers his toys, bones and treats.
He acts as policeman when Bailey has his funny five minutes or gets over-excited with his toys. He watches Bailey carefully, waits for him to momentarily drop his toy, then he dives in, nicks the toy and takes it back to his bed. Bailey is left totally perplexed, wondering what an earth happened to his game.

Brodie is a wonderful addition to our family and we hope we are helping him to forget the sadness of his previous life and to realise that he is safe now, and very much loved".

JULES

TOASTIE (aka Flash)
Toastie has gone from being abandoned on the streets last winter to living in the lap of luxury now!

PURDEY
"Just thought you would like to see Purdey on her first visit to the seaside. Pictures were taken on Rock Beach, Cornwall. Purdey was one of the litter of 10 pups by Connie. Purdey is now a big fine dog, boisterous, but without a spiteful bone in her body. She doesn't chase anything and is very friendly with other dogs. We love her to bits."

MILLIE
Millie's new Mum says "She is a lovely dog and we are so pleased with her!"

SOPHIE

"Sophie loves her toys and plays well in the garden. she loves her walks in the park and enjoys socialising with other dogs. We cant enagine life without her now, she is allways there when we open the door and loves hugs and kisses."

JOE and BILLY (Formerly Ali)
"Billy (formally Ali) who we adopted from you last November, and Joe came to live with us this Feb..These pics are from our holiday in Cornwall a few weeks ago.
They have fitted into the family perfectly, they give us so much love and affection (especially Billy) who loves putting his head on our lap and cuddling in.
Our Jack Russell, Polly, even though she's much smaller than the boys, is definitely the boss! But they all play happily together, and like nothing more than to run in the fields where we take them every day, and they are both playful but gentle towards other peoples dogs.
We are so lucky to have our beautiful boys and cant imagine life without them now. Thankyou."

JENNY
She is perfect for us - she went up and down the stairs from the moment we arrived home (not vey graceful!!) and does everything she is supposed to do outside. She is still a bit timid but coming out of her shell all the time. In fact, we think she might be a little madam when she has been here a while - but she is lovely.

ANGEL
Just thought i would send you some pictures of Angel. She has settled down really well and loves my other two dogs her spay has healed nicely and we are slowly getting her fit.
I get woken up every morning by Angel's wet nose in my face then she gets into bed and falls asleep under the covers.
Angel is very loving and gentle and is fine with the cat doesn't even chase when he runs. Shes great on the lead and in the car and is fully house trained.

DAISY and MANNY
Daisy also loves to curl up on the sofa laying her head on our mum, but she was a little bit naughty the other day when she pinched her mums baked potato off of the plate when she wasn't looking, our Daisy does like her food, I on the other hand am a little more refined and wouldn't dream of taking food from their plates

MURPHY (formerly Ludo)
"This is a usual scene in our house of him with my youngest son, Mason. He really does love his cuddles!
He has settled in really well and enjoying the fields surrounding our house."

Murphy inside the house rabbit's hutch! They get along very well!

ACE

Ace is one of the 10 puppies that were born in our kennels in November. He has now found his forever home and lives with his new Mum, Dad and Jem, the lurcher. Jem loves her new little brother and allows him to play with all of her toys.
Ace is growing up now:

OZZY (formerly Prince)
We went to a secure field at the weekend so he could run off the lead and he went completely mad. He loves throw toys and is even beginning to get the hang of bringing them back. I am going to go to agility with him, more so that he can run around and meet some more dogs than through the expectation that he will be any good! I am developing a network of doggy friends for him as he loves playing with them, and will be taking him to training classes in January. He already has a good recall, although I won't be letting him off the lead anywhere that's not secure for a few months

MOLLY (formerly Spot)

ROSIE (formerly Dusty)

"We have now had the pleasure of having Rosie at home for 6 months, and we can't imagine life without her! Her personality has really developed and she is quite a darling. She still has an uneasy truce with the two cats but when they walk past her when she is dozing on the lounge she doesn't even bother to lift her head from the floor anymore!

She met a very large pig who really took her fancy and she tried to get in the pen with it although the pig didn't seem too keen to share!
Every morning she chased the Welsh bunnies, all of whom were far too quick and knew the nooks and crannies far to well for her to get anywhere near any of them! But she enjoyed the run! We also took her to a beautiful dog friendly, sandy beach where she ran around and around in large circles, much to the amusement of the locals, and then had great fun chasing the seagulls before helping me eat my fish and chips from the paper!

Rosie has a circle of greyhound friends with whom we meet up and walk with as often as possible. She loves to be with the 'boys' and this really seems to have helped her confidence when meeting other dogs, although she is still a little shy with strangers! Rosie also has a very close girl buddy called Ruby and we walk with her virtually every day, they both like to get in the puddles and to mooch about, they have even been to the pub together!"

JAMIE (formerly Streak)
Jamie takes it easy in his lovely new home.

Having the time of his life now!

CAUCHY (formerly Micky)
"He's settled in really well and has started going to puppy classes. He is the biggest puppy there but is very gentle with the little ones.
We have had a few accidents over night with him which we are trying to resolve, time will tell. Ruby our Saluki X adores him and they run around and play together when we take them out. Cauchy's best friend is Milo the Pug, they play tug together with their raggy toys, Cauchy often playing tug with Milo's scruff, dragging him about the place!! We are trying to put a stop to this, but Milo gives as good as he gets most of the time.
We took the whole clan to a local dog show and won 4th in best family
and Cauchy won 1st prize in "dog the judge would like to take home".

PATRICK
Patrick is a huggable mischief-maker who waited a long time to find a loving home of his own. Eventually his foster family decided to offer him a permanent home, and while we are delighted for Patrick, we will all miss our loveable rogue!
Patrick is now home and happy, at long last!

ARCHIE (formerly Sam)
Archie's new mum says, "He has settled in really well and is enjoying life here with us. He's as good as gold."

GEM
Gem is so happy in her new home that she has sent us a letter! She says:
"Just a quick note to let you know I have settled in well with my new family. I've been very good and I haven't had any accidents so far."

I have been on some lovely walks with my new family. I have given them lots of cuddles and kisses and had plenty in return.

Thank you very much for looking after me and I'm sure I'm going to be very happy with my new family.
Love,
Gem xxx "

PAT
Here is Pat, who was recently rehomed by GLWR. His new owners are delighted with him: they say:
"I am very happy to have Pat in our family. he is a great dog and we are proud of him. I can't understand why lovely dogs like Pat get such bad treatment, they are so beautiful and gentle."

This little girl tells us
"I can talk about my problems and tell all my secrets to Pat and he won't tell anyone - he is my friend."
"Our life has really changed since we had Pat - it is much happier."

BRADY (formerly Tommy)

Brady is the boy with the poorly foot who was the focus of "Tommy's Appeal", a huge fundraiser to raise the money to pay for his treatment. He has now been permanently fostered and has gone to live with another GLWR dog, Clancy, and Lily, the black galgo girl who keeps them both in line!
He is doing so well! Within a few days he had learned his name and worked out how to navigate the stairs. He is a happy, loving boy who is delighted to have discovered the joys of a soft sofa and a real coal fire!
Brady will soon become a new GLWR sponser dog.

CLANCY (formerly Lyndon)

Clancy (formerly called Lyndon) has now gone to live in Somerset with a pretty black galgo called Lily. He loves his new life and goes for long walks in the local disused quarries where he barks at all the quail which are running about. Clancy has been very clean indoors since he came to his new home and has tried very hard to fit in with family life. Lily was not sure about him at first, but they have become good friends after a rocky start! Four days after he came home, he started to play, and now he can't be stopped! His new family are delighted that Clancy has come to live with them.

MAGIC
This is Magic enjoying a cuddle with his new mum. She says,"He settled in well and is loved by one and all. He bonded instantly with our Staffie "Katie". You would think he'd lived here all his life!"

MORGAN
Morgan has now gone to live with Magic, as his new brother. These are two wonderful boys €who have really landed on their paws with their beautiful new home and their doting new mum!

Magic and Morgan have become the best of friends! This is Magic on the left, Morgan on the right.

SALLY

"Look at me now! A sofa all to myself!"

NEDZ
Here is Nedz with his new mum and dad. Nedz came to the GLWR Hound Christmas Party where he met Father Christmas, enjoyed some tasty doggie treats and received his Christmas presents. After the party, he received the best Christmas present of all.......a new home with a new mum and dad!
