FAYE

13.12.09

“POPPY”, (Formerly Faye) came home with us three weeks ago, and in that short time she has settled in very well.

She enjoys her nice comfy bed and has taken to a couple of soft toys with squeaks in them. She hasn’t yet brought the toys to us to play with; she just mouths them whilst in her bed.

We were warned that “Poppy” was a bit of a thief and she proved that one Saturday evening. We left her for about half an hour to collect one of our daughters and on our return we discovered she had picked up a carrier bag that was placed on one of the kitchen sides, containing – a bag of sugar, 3 packs of tea bags & 4 boxes of mince pies and taken the lot to her bed. The sugar, tea bags and remains of the packaging was all over her bed and Poppy had consumed 22 of the 24 mince pies.

She showed no ill effects until about 11 o’clock the next day when she was first sick. She continued to be sick a few more times that day and felt very sorry for herself. 24hrs later she was back to her normal happy self.

Poppy comes to work with us everyday and meets lots of people who all love her and give her treats. She travels well in the car even though we have to lift her in initially. We have left her in the car for short periods whilst we have been shopping and she just lies down on the back seat.

Through the night is slowly improving, but she does still let out a cry which requires a little reassurance from us. We are also leaving her on her own in the house for short periods to try and improve her separation anxiety. It is only a matter of time before she will be confident to be left for longer periods.

Unfortunately since her arrival the weather has been awful and Poppy does not like going out in the rain (she prefers her bed). Going for walks is sometimes entertaining, as Poppy is very watchful of things around her, especially cats. She doesn’t attempt to attack them she just stares at them. The other funny trait she did have was occasionally stopping dead in her tracks and just staring at the ground, like a spoilt child, not wanting to walk any more. We found if we lift her head up and hold it close to us she will carryon walking. This has improved in the last week.

After visiting the kennels we would have loved to have taken them all home with us, but we definitely made the right choice with “Poppy”, she is a very loving, friendly dog who appears to be very contented after only a few weeks. We wouldn’t part with her now if you paid us; she brings a great deal of pleasure into our household. We are sure that in time the separation anxiety will improve and she will learn to play more with her toys & us.

MOLLY

Hello to everyone at the GLWR kennels,

Just a quick note to say thank-you for looking after me and finding me my new forever home. Although I think you had a little help from someone upstairs. I think that a special girl called Tuesday, who went to heaven at the beginning of May,  had a word and arranged for me to come and live with her  previous owner. She obviously wanted to keep it in the family as it turns out my fraternal great-grand parents were her maternal grandparents.

Anyway I love my new house. I have the choice of TWO sofas downstairs, both with cushions that tuck nicely under my chin AND a sofa upstairs for my own bed with a lovely duvet to keep me snug at night.

The outside world is still very scary but with Jacquie's encouragement I'm sure I'll soon get used to it. I managed to surprise her this morning when I had a little play bounce in the back garden and I spent a hour sunbathing while she painted the new garden fence this afternoon.

I have added a couple of pictures so you can see the change in my surroundings. The first was while I was still at the kennels and the second...well you can see for yourself.

Update September 2009

Hello everyone,

I've just got back from the golf course (I go every weekend and sometimes midweek) and thought I'd drop you a note to let you know how I'm getting on. I've finally learnt to leap up the stairs at bedtime but haven't get found the courage to come down them so I get carried down in the morning. Then I have some kibble and sardines before we go out for a bracing walk, then it's back to my couch!
One day a week I go to work and everyone at Avebury makes a fuss of me.( Those Jacquie works with and those in the local village shop and post office). I have my own bed at a desk and fresh water and the occasional treat so it's not too hard a day but I am glad to get home for a rest!

My coat has finally regrown nice and shiny black and even my thighs are furring up. Jacquie says it's the sardines every morning and the lavender/teatree washes twice a week that is doing it. You can see the difference from the photos (the day I left 12 July and then 23 Aug).

I'm glad to see Jamie, Kirby and Zorro have all got new homes and wish them well. I hope the other dogs at the kennels are as lucky as we all have been.

From our Devon and Cornwall branch - "Skye has truly landed on his paws!  Already, last night, after a long journey away from everything that was familiar, he has settled on his new duvet, and rolled over onto his back, all four paws waving about in total abandon - that's one REALLY relaxed dog!"

Just to let you know Alfie has settled in well with our other Greyhound, Maddie. Alfie has taken over the settee and hasn't stolen any food for weeks, good when left on his own with Maddie. Dispite being the size of a small pony he is gentle and very loving
Thanks for a great dog.

MILLIE

This beautiful girl didn't have to wait long for her forever home.

Millie and her new family.

Millie and family

A word from Millie's family.

Ju
st to keep you informed about Millie and how she is settling in.

She has settled into the pack lovely and is enjoying some lovely walks around the forest and the beach.  She really wanted to get in the water with Skip and Honey when we went to Lepe beach today!  So far her tail hasn’t stopped wagging and her beautiful grin which she gives us when she greets us is a sight to behold.  Her cheekiness and playfulness is really showing now and she is becoming much more confident in  herself, especially when she pinches Honey’s toys from right under her nose, which ends up in a chase around the garden and a game of peek a boo around the cars in the drive!!

CHARM

Charm has her very own family at last. Lucky girl - lucky family!

A word from Charm's family.

Just a quick little update to let you know how Charm is doing. She has settled in to her new home really quickly .

NO accidents to date and already spending most of her time asleep. She already knows to go and lay on her bed (or the sofa, that she's already fond of) whilst the family are eating. No trouble at night and has to be woken up in the morning when we come downstairs.

She has been enjoying her walks in the Morning and Evening and has dealt  well with the other dogs she has met.

The stairs are a bit of a challenge at the moment but I'm sure she shall master them soon.

Thanks for all your help and support at GLWR, we shall send some photos soon.

Update 17.04.09

Charm is doing very well. She's enjoying her 2 walks each day and is looking very fit, must say it's also having a positive effect on me too, have lost a fair bit of weight myself.

She hasn't caused any damage at home, never had an accident inside the house and hasn't stolen any food. She's good when left on her own in the kitchen and is very gentle with the kids.

She has mastered going up the stairs, though I do still have to carry her down, but sure that will come with time. She enjoys playing with her toys, especially the "pretend" cats, which she tosses in the air and catches.

Her absolute favourite thing is coming upstairs to the lounge in the evening and collapsing on her bed, whilst we watch some TV, she tries incredibly hard to be invisible, in the hope that she can stay there forever   :-)

BOBBY

JUNE

JUDY

Judy

From Judy ( now Bella )

It's 3 months since Dad came to claim me. He told me that not only was I the best dog there but possibly anywhere, which made me feel good. He gave me a mattress in a cosy corner of his study and I thought 'hmm- it will do for the time being'. Now the study is all mine, with couches for all occassions and Mum has renamed it 'the dog house'! Dad is allowed in one night a week when he listens to some awful wailing music and sips a nasty brown liquid called 'malt'.

Recently we went to N. Wales and I excelled myself in quite long walks, so Dad and I are going trekking to NW. Scotland soon because he thinks I'll be able to keep up with him (ho-ho. me keep up with him!!)

Dad smiles when he recalls Dave pointing at me and saying 'that one doesn't miss much'. I can't sleep or even lie down for most of the time like other greyhounds. There's too much going on I could easily miss something!

I still lunge after cats and rabbits and (I'm afraid) other dogs, but Dad says I'm getting better and I suppose I am but it's slow progress.

I love my home and I know I am loved. I've never felt such a sense of permanence before. I hope the greyhound friends I met throughout my racing years have all been similarly rewarded.

Much love to GLWR without which - you know the rest.

Bella

INDY

Home at last

Little princess

A word from Indy's new family.

Just a quick note to say that Indy is doing extremely well in her new home - to say we have only had her for 24hours it feels like she has always been here!  When Nick and Lyn brought her over yesterday they had already fed her, but we hadn't fed Jack and as soon as she heard the food going in his bowl she wanted some too!  Poor Jack only got to eat half his tea, despite the fact that we gave Indy her own bowl with some in.

We will send more updates along with photos once she has fully settled in, which doesn't look like it will take long!

Update 5th May 2009

Indy

Indy has settled in fully now. She loves her long walks and we have been able to let her off in secure areas. She suffers from the famous greyhound selective hearing, but we are hopeful that we will be able to let her off in open areas sometime in the near future!

Here are some pictures of her, including a couple of her with Blackjack - what a pair they make! They love being together. They even share the sofa, although Jack spreads out so much that Indy only has a small area - but she likes to sleep with her head on him so she doesn't seem to mind.

Indy out and about

It's great that we see Indy's foster family up Kit Hill most weekends. A big thankyou to them - I know it was difficult giving up this beautiful girl and she loved being with them and all their dogs. It's so nice to see all the new greyhounds they are fostering.

Thankyou to all at GLWR

PRINCE (now RUFUS)

After a very long wait our special lurcher has found himself a wonderful home. We'll miss you Prince. Be happy, sunshine.

Prince

An update from Rufus's family:

Rufus and Dad
Rufus and water

Dear GWLR,

We thought we'd better drop a quick line about Rufus so you would know he's not dropped off the radar but is actually doing quite the opposite and thriving!!!

We have had Rufus since the end of March this year and are pleased to say that the majority of that has been really pleasurable - the 3am wake up calls when he was settling in weren't that enjoyable!  Luckily he settled down very quickly and is thoroughly relaxed in his new routine.

He is putting on a little bit of weight but has decided he is definitely not a vegetarian, he won't touch anything which may possibly be good for him but will wolf up anything he shouldn't have - even helping himself to left over Sunday roast and crumble at the parent's house!

We'll keep you updated every so often when we remember to actually download photos from our cameras!!!

Thanks for a great dog!

Happy boy

FEBRUARY

BRUCE

27.02.09 - Brilliant news! Bruce's foster family have fallen in love with him and have made him a permanent member of their family! Have a wonderful life, special boy.

Updates from Bruce's foster (now adopted) family.

19.01.09 - We just thought you would like to know how Bruce is getting on, we have had him for just over a week now, it took two days to house train him and to get him to go through the dog flap, he loves his Sunday roast as do Manny and Daisy.
Manny was very quiet for about four days, but he has come around and is fine with Bruce now, although we have to stroke Manny first when we come in, they sleep on the big sofa together, Daisy has let them both know she is still the boss but has let Bruce get on the other sofa with her and she does like to follow him around.
They all go out across the fields running together and get covered in mud, and our back garden looks like a race track, but it is lovely to see them playing together.
Bruce has settled in great, he is like a big lolloping teenager who likes to go through things rather than around them, but he is the most lovable dog you could wish for and loves to play.
Apart from seeing cats (obviously) they all walk together very well on the leads
My son Barry and his partner Susan came to Sunday lunch this week and brought their greyhound Charlie and lurcher Milly (both girls) Bruce loved them both but especially Milly and followed her everywhere, we had five of them running round the garden Sunday and no growling, so that was nice.
Bruce has not tried to pinch anything yet, (except my slippers) and is learning to lay down and wait like Manny and Daisy until we have finished dinner before they have their tit bits, he is very aware and likes to look into everything, he just melts your heart.
My son loved him and said he acts as though he has been here all the time.

25.01 09 - We took them all across the field this morning and let them go, mud everywhere! but they loved it, Bruce is a great big baby and likes lots of cuddles, and he loves playing with a football, Manny has really taken to him now, he was very quiet for 4 days, but he is back to his old ways and can't stop wagging his tail, Manny and Daisy take turns to get on the sofas with him, they are all led down at the moment waiting for their sunday dinner (roast lamb today) and they love all the trimmings as well.
Bruce is very special and we love him to bits, he has a thing that he loves to do and that is to go up into the bedroom, lay down and look at himself in the mirror, I suppose thats because he is so handsome.
The neighbours are stunned, as they didn't realise we had three because they are so quiet, the only one who barks is Manny if he sees another dog at the gate, except to say when the phone rings, then we have three howlers, so we might have to change the ring tone.

Bruce has learnt to lay down and wait for his dinner like Manny and Daisy, before he would just try to take food off the plates, he is a very intelligent boy and learns very quickly, as I said before we absolutely adore him and can't understand why he wasn't adopted months ago.

We are very grateful to his foster family because, as they probably know by now, Bruce is a very special boy. Love ya Brucie!

MICKEY (NOW SIDNEY)

Mickey

To Sidney

Sleek,
Fur of silk.
Feet so fleet,
Skin and tissue, paper-thin,
Cobalt veins
And bird-bones show
When the sun shines through.
Eyes startled, puzzled, tentative,
And ears that semaphore.

Can this be trust?
A nose nuzzles, eyes melt,
A tongue tentatively licks,
And I am sure.

Mickey has been renamed Sidney since his foster family fell in love with this gorgeous lad and gave him his forever home. We look forward to hearing updates.
Be happy little man.

Update from Sidney's family

Dear Sidney has been with us since 10/12/08.  He arrived somewhat rapidly, as he was in desperate need of a warm, domestic home, following a severe leg injury.

When darling Sid first arrived, he was rather shy and unassuming - not!  A few weeks later, he was attempting to rule the roost!  He is affectionate, dishonest, loving, and a thief!  He is entirely food-driven and calorie-motivated!  Two days after his arrival, he stole a stock cube (vegetable) from the work surface, and consumed it, silver foil and all!  (No ill effects either)

His thieving tendencies have now broadened their spectrum - into everything.

When we're dressing in our best clothes (the dog-walking stuff) for a walk, Sidney hovers.  At boot-donning time, he moves in, and when your concentration is totally upon the task of footwear-addition, he nips in, snatches the hat off your head, and makes off with it, silly grin in place, chuckles resounding.

Then there's the post - he nicks that too.

And chuckles.

And he has awful wind too!

But. if newcomers to GLWR are reading this, be assured, adopting a greyhound will probably be the most wonderful, satisfying and selfless act you will every perform.

Further update

Sidney has settled wonderfully well with us.  From day one, he was a relaxed (lazy) chilled out (bone idle) greyhound.  (In other words - typical!)

His looks are stunning - that pure white body, and the Phantom-of-the-Opera blue mask make a stunning combination.  He had grown a thick winter coat when he first came to us in December, but quickly shed it in a comfortably heated home.  (I gave up hoovering for a month or so.)

At first, Sid was so lazy, he had to be lifted off his forever sofa (in the conservatory - read "dog heaven") but more recently, he's discovered the joys of walks.  Just as we discovered the non-joys of greyhound walks.

Set off in pick-up.  Reach Kit Hill (favourite Cornish beauty spot) Evacuate dogs (seven at the moment) and Dear Sidney runs off madly in all directions.  Fitted with greyhound cage muzzle (just in case of encounters with small, fluffy rats on leads) Sidney is in his element.  He doesn't run.  He just trots..............but in that lanky, very speedy way greyhounds do.

To be honest, Nick and I are not exactly in tip-top health (old and knackered) and we just can't keep up.  Sid takes about as much notice of his name as........well, a dog that doesn't take any notice of his name.

But he's funny - he grins often.  He's cheeky - when you're getting dressed for dog-walking - beware! - as you don your boots, he nicks the hat off you head and runs away with it!

He'd been here only a few days when he ate a stock cube.  Vegetable, it was.  Silver foil and all.  No, he wasn't sick.

And the post.  He nicks the post.  He doesn't eat it, but he does hide it.

And he steals pencils, bits of paper, bread wrappers...........other stuff.

He's a nightmare, actually.  A lovely, lovely nightmare.

So, if you're browsing the site, thinking about adopting a greyhound.............don't...........don't..............

Oh, go on then!  If you're lucky, you might find one as lovely as Sidney.  (I mean, I wrote a poem about him...!)

Update 10.07.09

Here's the latest.  Sidney (formerly Mickey) has now become a very loving, affectionate and playful companion.  The arrival on scene of other foster dogs has helped his personality to flourish - and the best of these is Jester (aka Prince).  This lad has been with us for less than a fortnight, but already he has bonded with the group, and he and Sidney are just lovely together.  Jester is naturally very playful, and so now is Sidney.  The two are playing with toys in the garden, chasing each other, and competing good-naturedly for affection.

In some ways, Sidney has been a rather late bloomer - Jester has learned his name, and several commands in a few moments, as compared with Sid.  But our forever lad has been well worth the wait.  Now, he's happy, settled, loving, inquisitive, affectionate and playful.  He is a truly wonderful ambassador for greyhounds since he has such unusual markings, and is determined that every person he meets will pet him and be his friend.  (His nose-thrusts into the hands of passing strangers have ensured attention, even from obvious non-doggy folk).  But his calm confidence, (sometimes sadly misplaced) in the affection of human beings, has also led to great affection for young children too.  Despite his almost certain lack of contact with children, he is amazingly confident with them, and he has most happily been "mauled" by toddlers without demonstrating the slightest sign of impatience, let alone aggression.

If you're reading this, with a view to, perhaps, adopting a greyhound, remember this lad was raced in Ireland, and in all probability, never came into contact with any human being, in a domestic environment, let alone a child.  Yet he is tolerant and docile, and his behaviour is not exceptional, but representative of the greyhound breed as a whole.

If you're browsing..........thinking of adopting a greyhound..........bear all this in mind..........and call us.
