In general, an excellent article, but people shouldn't go running away with the idea that the British greyhound racing industry is any better than the Irish.
According to research done by Greyhound Watch (see http://tinyurl.com/GreyhoundsKilled) British greyhound racing is responsible for the deaths of over 12,000 greyhounds per year, which is considerably higher than dog racing in Ireland, which is a much smaller industry.
As Irish breeders supply about 80% of the greyhounds which race on British tracks, a large number of these 12,000+ dogs are bred and put to death in Ireland, after being considered unsuitable for racing.
Nevertheless, it is the British greyhound racing industry that is ultimately responsible for this slaughter, because it is demand coming from tracks in Britain that has caused these dogs to be bred in the first place.
Therefore, one of the best ways to end the suffering and slaughter of greyhounds in Ireland is to educate and encourage the British public to boycott greyhound racing, so that a further decline in the dog racing industry in Britain will lead to fewer greyhounds being bred for suffering and slaughter in Ireland.
